Marco's Inside Scoop: The After School Program

By Marco

I'm reporting this "Inside Scoop" for The Grizzly Posts on Cal Prep Seniors and graduates who work in the After School Program after studying in classes all day. I asked them these questions:

1.What are things you love working as a senior in the After School Program?

Ms. Natalia: Although the kids here drive me crazy (LOL) I don't think I would change working here at all. We all have our good and bad days but at the end of the day I like the community we created.
Nano: It has its ups and downs. I get tired sometimes and I don't feel like working when I'm tired. But “I have to chase the bag and get paid as much as I can”, as they say!
Lanayah: I love to watch the 8th graders because they are all different and have brilliant personalities.
2. What are things you dislike?

Ms.Natalia: Last year I worked as a Senior, but now that I’m a college freshman, it’s hard to balance work, school, and personal life.
Lanayah: It would be better if we have activities for the kids.

What are the highlights of your experience?
Emiliano: I get to hang out with the students and hear them say funny things.

Ms. Natalia:During my senior year, the 6th graders (who are now 7th graders) made Christmas ornaments and we decorated cookies for the winter holidays. It was a fun bonding experience as I watched everyone having fun.
What are things you recommend to others about working as a senior?

Natalia: If you’re someone with a lot of patience and you’re hoping to gain some job experience working as an educator , this is the perfect job for you. Also if you want to pursue education as a major this is a great place to try out teaching.
Emiliano: If you’re working as a senior, you have a lot of things to do. Get “yo schedule right.”
Lanayah: You have to find time for yourself, at all times.

What part of the job do you love the most?
Ms. Natalia: I love seeing all of the kids grow as a person, and I like being able to create a safe space for them.
Lanayah: I love having the kids coming and talking to me about anything or how they feel about others.
