Captain Fedigan, a firefighter recently retired from the San Francisco Fire Department, visited the 12th grade class for College and Career Preparedness. She spoke about her career as a firefighter. "I loved every minute of it," she told three classes. She passed around her helmet dinged by falling debris while she was fighting fires and students took selfies. Mr. A., Cal Prep's college advisor, posed beside her. "It's certainly a career path worth choosing," he told his class. Some worried that he might leave to join the force.
As Juan pulled the helmet strap around his chin, he broke into a wide grin. This is sooo cool," he said.
Capt. Fedigan encouraged Cal Prep seniors to visit their local firehouse and offer to volunteer to "see how you like it." She stressed that although one could become a firefighter without going to college, it might prove more difficult to advance up through the ranks later in their career. She stressed that when firefighters hope for a promotion they are usually asked, "And where did you go to college?"
