By Brianna C.

Feeling sad and heartbroken? Go get yourself some comfort chocolates for just a dollar! For just one dollar, you can get a delicious chocolate and help out the senior class. The seniors are going around selling chocolates of varying flavors such as almond, dark chocolate, wafer, caramel and more. By buying from them, you are helping this fundraiser for senior events such as prom, grad night and more.

These chocolates are very delicious and students seem to love them. Some seniors have already sold 2 boxes of 60 chocolates! Their amazing taste and affordability makes it very hard to pass up on buying them. Not to mention... by emptying your pockets to buy some chocolate, you are helping the seniors make the best of their last year of high school.

Did you know who invented chocolate? No, not the Swiss. It was invented in Mesoamerica, and "the bean used to make chocolate, called Cacao, can be dated as far back as 1500 BC," according to www.spanishacademy.com
“The word cacao—or kakaw—in Mayan hieroglyphs is spelled with the head, body, or fin of a fish. The word fish is kay in various Mayan languages, and this word was shortened to the syllable ka, which was doubled, and with an added wa syllable to spell ka-ka-wa, or kakaw”

“Looking at the history of chocolate, Mayans and Aztecs were some of its first consumers.During the Mayan period, people usually consumed chocolate as a bitter and spicy drink. This is because rather than adding sugar, they added cornmeal and chillies to the cacao to get the spicy flavor. Not quite the same taste as a Hershey’s bar!
Corn and chocolate were important to the Mayans as these two foods were both highly symbolic and very useful for the Mayans. Maize was an essential food, and as a result, its growth symbolized the cycle of life. Cacao provided medicinal effects and was used in religious ceremonies. Eventually, maize and cacao became a significant culinary combination, one which is still enjoyed in modern Mexico.” -SpanishAcademy.com
So next time you see a senior holding a box, don't forget to buy a couple of chocolate bars. It will be beneficial for both of you and I'm sure that the students selling these tasty treats will appreciate you. And if you're from Guatemala, Mexico or Honduras, you can proudly munch on something your early ancestors may have helped create. Buen provecho!

And don't forget! Bring some cash tomorrow, teachers!
